Shin’ichi was invited by his primary classmate to attend a meeting, which is his very first too. There he met his life mentor, Toda Sensei. That meeting was also the prime point of world wide kosen-rufu of 192 countries.

Shin’ichi : As a token of my gratitude, allow me to recite a poem, an impromptu one…

Traveler,

From whence do you come?

And where do you go?

The moon has set,

But the Sun has not yet risen.

In the chaos of darkness before the dawn

Seeking the light,

I advance

To dispel the dark clouds from my mind

To find a great tree unbowed by the tempest

I emerge from the earth.

The Oneness of Mentor and Disciple; My Sword, My Crown.

On January 1948, Josei Toda’s publishing firm was looking for an editor for its youth magazine; hence they interviewed and recruited Shin’ichi Yamamoto. Toda has never forgotten Shin’ichi Yamamoto, while Shin’ichi Yamamoto had resolved to assist his mentor with his whole life, be it in the Publishing Company or in the Soka Gakkai.

On 1949, Toda’s publishing business was failing; and eventually it was forced to cease publication. Another Toda’s business venture - The Toko Construction Credit Association was also in trouble. In order not to allow his business plights affect Gakkai, Josei Toda resigned as the General Director on August 24. Shin’ichi Yamamoto was greatly disturbed by this turn of event. Although Yamamoto assisted Toda wholeheartedly, but the sudden resignation of his mentor made him lost his sense of direction.

So, Shin’ichi went to Toda and asked dejectedly “Sensei, from this day onwards, who will be my mentor?”

Toda told him in a clear tone: “Although I cause so much trouble for you all the time, I am always your mentor!”

Shin’ichi was delighted to hear this desired response, he thought: “It doesn’t matter what may happen, as long as the relationship between Sensei and I remain unchanged. Sensei will always be my teacher for my entire life! That is all I need to know!”

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Toda’s career further deteriorated and eventually, the Toko Construction Credit Association was also closed down. Toda remained calm in facing the difficulties, however, he was very concerned about Shin’ichi’s health. Toda encouraged Shin’ichi not to give up and he even prayed to the Gohonzon for Shin’ichi. This moved Shin’ichi to tears. Hence, he wrote a poem: -

“Still serving an old and mystic fate,

Though others changed,

I alter not.”

Yamamoto handed the poem to Mr. Toda the next day.

Toda felt great joy on receiving the poem. He looked stern for a moment, but the next moment, he smiled! Toda then replied Yamamoto with a poem: -

“Whenever I stand on fields of war,

Unfailing at my side,

You are my sword.”

Mr Toda paused for a moment, he would not hand the poem to Yamamoto. Mr Toda then added another poem before giving the paper to Shin’ichi.

“Fading, failing,

At death, I the king leave to you

My crown.”

When Shin’ichi looked at the poem, he was deeply touched, and thought to himself: Am I really the sword of my mentor? Will I deserve to be called his crown…?” Shin’ichi looked up at Toda; and this moment is forever engraved in Shin’ichi’s life. These two individuals had been united into one in their hearts; their separate lives were assimilated into a single being.
